Thrifty Ways to Help the Planet!

Happy Earth Day! I hope you find some time today to appreciate nature and literally smell the flowers. I’m fortunate to be spending part of my day volunteering on a golf course for my university, so I’ll be able to enjoy the sunshine on this wonderful day. In honor of the Earth, I wanted to write about some easy and cheap ways to help the planet!

  • Use cold water for your washing machine
  • Use energy-efficient light bulbs where you can
  • Try to avoid rinsing dishes before loading them into the dishwasher
  • Use reusable shopping bags or repurpose bags from other locations to avoid using plastic
  • Go paperless with your bills (I get emails about payment reminders instead of letters)
  • Borrow books from your local library instead of purchasing paperbacks
  • Rent your textbooks or purchase PDF versions
  • Wrap gifts in last year’s wrapping paper (my friends get a laugh out of getting Christmas-wrapped birthday presents in July)
  • Use coconut oil for a variety of purposes (shaving, cooking, moisturizing, makeup removal, etc)
  • Find metal razors instead of plastic razors (or razors with replaceable heads)
  • Use biodegradable multi-purpose wipes for the house, and cut them in half when you need to
  • Have one vegetarian day a week (if you want! I do Meatless Mondays and it’s a fun way to mix up your eating while helping the planet)
  • Buy essentials in bulk when possible, cutting down on packaging
  • Use a reusable mug/tumbler for hot drinks
  • Invest in a Hydroflask or other reusable water bottle
  • Buy local produce when possible (cuts down on pollution from transportation from outside local area)
  • Recycle your old technology (iPhones, old tablets, etc) to avoid having them in landfills

These are some of the easy and simple ways to help the planet in your every day life. How do you help the planet? Share down below if it’s not on this list! I love learning new things and can’t wait to see different ways to help our beautiful Earth. I hope everyone has a great Earth Day and get to smell the flowers. Thank you so much for reading!
