I never considered myself a morning person. Sure, in high school I would have zero period (which was a class that would start at 7am) and would go to school super early before going to any athletic commitment that I had before falling asleep promptly at ten pm, but I didn’t consider myself a morning person. All throughout college, I would try to get as much sleep as possible so that my body could heal from the constant pressure of being a collegiate athlete. It wasn’t until years later, when I had the opportunity to change my hours for my job that I realised how great it is to wake up early.
I used to work from 8:30am to 5pm Monday through Friday. When I was given the option of coming in at 7:30am and working until 4:30pm, I jumped at the opportunity. A few of my coworkers had that schedule before I elected to have those times, and I saw them leave early every day and enjoy more time in the afternoon away from work. They always talked of how there wasn’t any traffic and that they loved the ability to have an extra hour of daytime/time in the evening to enjoy before having to worry about going to bed.
This is the second week that I have been waking up at 6am for work. The first week, we had a holiday on Monday so I only had to wake up early for four of the days. This week, it’s been the first full week of having to adjust my sleep schedule. It was easier in the first part of the week, but it got harder on Thursday and Friday. I still enjoy the fact that I don’t have traffic on my way to work or on my way home, along with how much I get done before 9am. On my old schedule, I would just be wrapping up answering all of my emails. Now, it’s getting all of my emails answered/categorised, completing my important to-dos, and finding which things I need to order because the expiration date is coming up.
It took a bit of adjusting, but overall, I’m very happy with my decision. I’ve been waking up early on my weekends/days off as a side effect and I’ve had more time to enjoy doing whatever I like (editing, writing, reading, baking, and more!). I feel so efficient and really like it more than I thought I would. While I love sleeping, I love the extra time even more. I highly recommend waking up early whenever you can so that you can have more time for yourself!
