I’ve made a lot of changes over the summer. I switched to being a vegetarian and switched up a lot of my diet. I began a lot of different activities and hobbies, like rock climbing, yoga, and running (none of which I had been too interested in before). It’s been a big change from what I’m normally used to, but there was a big reason for why I made the change.
I wasn’t happy where I was.
I didn’t like the way I looked or felt, which led to an unhappy mindset. My body felt better once I cut meat out of my diet, but there was still a part of me that wasn’t fully satisfied. Being a college athlete, I have to work out a lot to stay in shape for my sport. But I was working out because I had to, not because I wanted to. I felt like I was stuck in a rut. I was just doing the motions, instead of doing things with intent.
I had a revelation where I realized I am only going to be a college until the end of the year. I had to find another physical activity that would supplement my love of working out (even though I wasn’t in the right mindset for working out). One of my friends took me rock climbing, which was a lot of fun. That was the beginning of finding other activities to help me working out again. I wanted to find a lifestyle that would be perfect for me once volleyball was over.
And I did. Rock climbing, running, yoga, paddle boarding, hiking, and many more will fill the void and helped me change my lifestyle to one where I was truly happy. It took a while for me to find the right things that would make me happy, but I am so glad that I waited to find the right thing. It makes it so much better that I found it when I needed it most.
My first official yoga class is on Friday and I can’t wait. It’s exciting that I can’t wait to go to the gym, rather than go because I know I have to. I’m doing it for myself more so than I’m doing it for my sport (even though that is a part of it). It feels really good to be doing something because I want to and knowing how good it is for me and my body.
And that’s the big reason for why I changed my lifestyle! I felt like I was stuck doing the same motions and I didn’t feel truly happy. But I searched for what would make me happy. I took charge and actively tried to find what would help me. I ate healthier, which led to me feeling better. I worked out for myself and switched up my activities, which led to me looking better (and feeling better about myself!).
If you related to feeling stuck in a rut, I urge you to look at what you do in your every day life. Do you like the things that you’re doing? Are you doing it because you have to or because you want to? Take some time and think about it. It took me a long time to figure out why I wasn’t happy but it was so worth it because I am now.
Try meditating, a new activity, read a new book, or just take some time to enjoy the nature or environment around you. It’s important to take time for yourself and understand what you’re feeling.
